Why the BVI?

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) comprises of approximately sixty stunning islands, islets and cays located circa sixty miles east of Puerto Rico. This British Overseas Territory, with its outstanding natural beauty, professional service providers and English common law traditions is proving itself to be a highly desirable location for those seeking a safe haven or those wanting to substitute cold winter climates for warmer destinations. The property market in the BVI has been seeing an increase in demand as many investors are more motivated than ever to own alternative homes in jurisdictions with smaller populations and with stricter and proven approaches to dealing with natural disasters and global events like the COVID-19 pandemic.

GLOBAL EQUITY CAPITAL MARKETS: REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE AND OUTLOOK FOR 2021

While 2020 was a turbulent year, it was also a dynamic year for the global equity markets (ECM).

Though the pandemic caused a global slowdown in ECM in the first half of 2020, IPO activity in the second half, primarily driven by companies seeking listing on the NASDAQ, Hong Kong Stock Exchange and London Stock Exchange, picked up significant momentum, resulting in a quick recovery and a record high of over USD$330 billion capital raised across over 1,590 listings.

Aside from the pandemic, increased tension between China and the 2020 US presidential election, Brexit, vaccination roll-outs and government economic stimulus programmes, all contributed to a roller coaster year for ECM. But despite this backdrop of uncertainty, major US indices ended 2020 on near all-time highs.

BVI BRANCH OF GLOBAL GOVERNANCE BODY REBRANDS AS THE CHARTERED GOVERNANCE INSTITUTE UK & IRELAND - BVI BRANCH

Gareth Thomas

Sara Drake

The UK & Ireland division of the global governance body, The Chartered Governance Institute, has today announced a new name for its branch in the British Virgin Islands. The branch is now called The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland – BVI Branch.

Sara Drake, Chief Executive of The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland explains the reason behind the change:

“The renaming marks the completion of a rebranding process begun in 2018, following the decision by the global Institute’s membership to change the name of the Institute from The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) to The Chartered Governance Institute. The global body adopted its new name in 2019 and The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland division has now completed its own rebranding process.

Gareth Thomas, Chair of the Institute’s BVI Branch comments:

“I truly welcome the expansion of the BVI branch of the Institute to include more countries from this region and look forward to working with my colleagues to continue to support the governance professionals working in the financial services industry. Although the original BVI branch was formally established in 2005, it has provided support, advice and networking opportunities to governance professionals working in BVI Financial Services since the 1990s. I am delighted with the completion of the rebranding process as The Chartered Governance Institute name better encapsulates what our members and students bring to the table in terms of governance expertise.
