PANDORA PAPERS DIVERT ATTENTION FROM REAL TAX ISSUES

Mark Pragnell

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and their collaborators within mainstream media organisations have reignited an important and lively debate about offshore tax. Unfortunately, their perspective looks more towards the 70s than the 2020s.

There is no doubt that some parties abuse the international tax rules, sometimes egregiously, and that behaviour should be stopped. However, there is a huge difference between use and abuse, and rogue behaviour (of which ICIJ have identified very little from their latest tranche of leaked information) doesn’t invalidate the whole system.

SUPPORTING THE NEXT FRONTIER

Elise Donovan

Elise Donovan, CEO of BVI Finance, in an interview with African Review, discusses why the world's leading economies are pivoting towards Africa and how the BVI can support the continent to achieve its potential.

African Review: What excites you most about Africa right now?

Elise Donovan: Africa is unquestionably the next frontier. It has many attributes that are causing the world’s leading economies to pivot to the continent to explore investment opportunities. What is happening now and the potential for the future is itself cause for major excitement.

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE NEXT UPCOMING CRYPTO CURRY CLUB BVI

When the Crypto Curry Club, the main purpose was to create a forum for like-minded people to come and share experiences and knowledge. It was a play on the Crypto Curry Club in England. The UK Crypto Curry Club is very much a social meeting place only but as our events continued, it quickly became apparent that members were keen on educational content with the feedback received being that there needs to be a focal point.

At this next event, which will be held on the 1 year anniversary (20 January 2022), we are proposing just that. A space and an open mic. We acknowledge that some people are hesitant to ask that “stupid question” in a bigger group setting so we want to create an environment with a focal point where we can share stories (the good, the bad and the discord scams that many of us have fallen for). The opportunity is there to ask anything and everything; whether you’re new to crypto and want to know how and where to invest? Whether NFTs are your thing and you have a tip you want to share on the next Bored Ape or Crypto Punk? Or if you want to give a tour of your metaverse property. Let’s do it! Let’s share. This is such an exciting and fast-moving space that there are no stupid questions – just opportunities to learn.

Times and venue to be released early January but please mark your calendars for Thursday 20 January 2022.
